What sort of bike would you build for $10,000?

As gear nerd and serial window shopper, I decided to “challenge” myself to put together a dream bike build. This is what ten grand could buy you at The Pro’s Closet today.

The bike

2020 Specialized Allez Sprint Disc for sale2020 Specialized Allez Sprint Disc, 54cm - $4,513.99

Watching the fast and furious opening week of the Tour de France inspired me to build a sprint weapon to crush flat roads. I’ll start with this 2020 Allez Sprint. It’s stiff, aero, and my size. Plus, I prefer aluminum bikes because they’re tough and they give you more budget for upgrades. This Allez has a full Dura-Ace mechanical drivetrain and great paint. My nickname is ‘Goose’ but with such a frosty colorway I might have to ask my friends to call me ‘Iceman.’

Wheels and tires

ENVE SES 7.8 carbon wheels and tires for saleENVE SES 7.8 wheelset - $2,099.99
ENVE SES road tire 25mm (x2) - $74.99 x 2

The Roval CLX 50 carbon wheels that come on the Allez are nice, but I want wheels that are properly deep to get the ultimate aero advantage. The ENVE SES 7.8 fit the bill and even come with blue decals that match the bike. I’ll pair them with tan-wall ENVE SES road tires.

Cockpit

ENVE Aero handlebar, stem, and Fizik Tempo Argo saddleENVE SES Aero Road handlebar - $399.99
ENVE Aero Road Carbon stem - $299.99
ENVE Aero stem computer mount - $59.99
ENVE Handlebar tape - $38.99
Fizik Vento Argo R1 saddle - $224.99

Since I’m going for ENVE wheels, I’ll complete the package by upgrading to a full ENVE aero cockpit. Also, I’ll ditch the white saddle and bar tape. TPC doesn’t have a Specialized Power saddle in stock so I’ll go for a Fizik alternative, the carbon rail Vento Argo.

Power meter and head unit

Garmin Rally RK200 power meter pedals and Edge 830 bike computer Garmin Rally RK200 dual sensing power meter pedals - $1,099.99
Garmin Edge 830 bike computer - $399.99

It wouldn’t be a dream bike without some fancy gadgets. The Garmin Rally power meter pedals will withstand my Cat 5-destroying wattage while I use the Edge 830 head unit with Strava live segments to chase every flat KOM that I can.

Other parts & accessories

CeramicSpeed OSPW system, UFO Chain, and Arundel carbon bottle cagesCeramicSpeed OSPW System for Shimano 9100/8000 - $359.99
CeramicSpeed UFO chain - $74.99
Arundel DTR Mandible bottle cage (x2) - $78.95 x 2
ENVE water bottle (x2) - $11.99 x 2
Arundel Medio seat bag - $34.95

I still have $700 to play with. It’s time to get crazy. The CeramicSpeed OSPW System reduces friction with oversized pulleys. Add a UFO waxed chain and you have the most efficient drivetrain possible. Then I’ll finish the whole build with some Arundel carbon bottle cages, a classy Arundel saddle bag, and ENVE water bottles.

Total: $9,939.70

This may be the most blinged-out Allez Sprint ever conceived (I would be the king of @your_allez_is_overpriced), but it’s definitely more interesting than any off-the-shelf carbon superbike. Every upgrade I chose is top-of-the-line, and many are way over the top, but I still came in under budget. With the remaining $60.30 dollars, I’d buy some Skratch Labs nutrition to fuel the absurd top speeds I’ll certainly achieve on this bike.

Did I make good choices? What would you do differently? Let us know in the comments!
